Now Foods 5-HTP Neurotransmitter Support, the intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan and serotonin, is extracted from the bean of an African plant (Griffonia simpicifolia). Now Foods 5-HTP is used by the human body to produce serotonin, a substance important for the normal functioning of the nerves and brain. Serotonin appears to play significant roles in sleep, emotional mood, pain control, inflammation, intestinal peristalsis and other functions of the body.
Now Foods 5-HTP is not present in significant quantities in a typical diet.
The human body manufactures Now Foods 5-HTP from L-tryptophan, a naturally occurring amino acid found in most dietary proteins. However, eating foods that contain L-tryptophan does not significantly increase Now Foods 5-HTP levels. Supplemental Now Foods 5-HTP is naturally derived from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a West African medicinal plant.
